Zack Snyder is embarking on a long-cherished passion project titled The Last Photograph, an intimate war drama that marks a significant departure from his usual superhero and sci-fi epics. Starring Rebel Moon veterans Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, the story follows an ex-DEA agent who ventures into the South American mountains to search for his missing niece and nephew after their diplomat parents are brutally murdered. He enlists the help of a down-and-out war photographer—who is the only witness to the killers—leading to a journey that tests beliefs and blurs the line between reality and the surreal. Originally conceived over two decades ago with a setting in Afghanistan and attachments like Christian Bale and Sean Penn, the project finally moves forward under the banner of Snyder’s Stone Quarry with a screenplay by Kurt Johnstad and promises a more grounded, intimate tone.
Production is slated to begin soon, with filming scheduled across diverse locations including Colombia, Iceland, and Los Angeles. In Colombia, Jaguar Bite will provide key production services, supporting Snyder’s vision with on-the-ground expertise and resources. The score will be composed by Hans Zimmer alongside Steven Doar and Omer Benyamin, and Snyder will produce alongside Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller. Describing the project as “a meditation of life and death,” Snyder has embraced the appeal of creating “a movie in an intimate way,” tapping into personal themes and experiences. The film is expected to contrast starkly with his previous blockbuster-scale endeavors, opting instead for a smaller budget and a more tactile filmmaking approach.
